During our first session, you will be given an opportunity to discuss your difficulties in greater depths and identify how you would like therapy to help. The session will last 50 minutes and you will have an option to continue to work together.

If you wish to continue to work together, we will spend the next couple of sessions reflecting upon all aspects of your life to get a fuller understanding of your experiences.

Please note, you have the choice to end therapy at any time if you do not feel it is right for you.

How do I get started?

Making the first step can be daunting. I always start off by offering an initial brief consultation on the phone. This gives me an opportunity to hear what you are struggling with and a chance to think about how you would like help. It also gives you an opportunity to ask any questions and to see if this is good fit.

Please contact me to arrange for your free 15-minute consultation.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes, anything discussed within the working environment is kept safe and confidential. However, there are two situations where it is essentials that I break confidentiality;

  • If I believe you to be at risk of harming yourself or someone else.

I have a duty of care to protect you or others, in this case, I would explain why I am breaching confidentiality and will discuss my concerns. I would also encourage you to discuss concerns with your GP or others care professionals.

  • Where I feel I need to discuss aspects of our work within supervision.

At times, I may need to consult with my supervisor to support our work together. In this case, I would always try to keep your identity anonymous during the discussion.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions that you may require depends on the difficulties you are experiencing. This can range from short terms interventions (8-12 sessions) to longer term interventions. It is vital that people have the time and space to explore and work through their difficulties. To ensure we are working towards therapy goals, we will frequently review in therapy together.

Why are sessions more expensive with a psychologist than other therapists?

Counselling Psychologists are highly trained mental health professionals who have doctorate level degrees. Their level of training and experience may differ from other therapists. Psychologists are often informed by psychological research and therefore offer evidence-based treatment. This means the therapy offered aims to provide the most effective outcomes for the difficulties you are enduring.

What is the difference between counselling, psychology and psychiatry?

It can be highly confusing trying to figure out who can best help you. While all three groups of professional’s works towards treating mental health conditions, they all differ in their approaches and strategies to treating mental health.

Firstly, Psychiatrist are medical doctors, they can diagnose mental health conditions and treat associative symptoms by prescribing medication. Depending on their level of training, some may also incorporate talking therapies into their treatment plan.

The term ‘therapist’ is often interchangeably used to describe professionals working in mental health, these include counsellors, psychologists and psychotherapist. Therapists offer talking and behavioural therapies.

Counsellors adopt a person-centred, non-judgemental and empathic approach, whereby their aim is to encourage clients to talk through their problems and through this experience clients can build awareness, understand inner thoughts and feelings which in turn will help you to make clearer sense of what this all means to you. By connecting with your internal resources and having better insight my help you to find ways to cope with you process enables you to find ways to cope with your difficulties and make decisions to empower you.

Similar to counsellors, psychologists also provide an empathic, non-judgement approach but also offers short to longer term evidence-based therapies to treat mental illness. Psychologists are trained to work across the life span and work with many mild to severe mental health presentations. They bring a psychological perspective to a person’s difficulties with the aim of reducing and managing levels of distress and enhancing wellbeing through psychological interventions, such as working with thinking patterns or behaviour. Although they cannot prescribe medication, they do provide the client with a deeper psychological understanding of their difficulties and use psychological tools to alleviate distress and make healthier changes.
